A follow gate asks people to follow you before they get the link they commented for. It is the main reason creators use comment-to-DM, because every reel that offers a freebie can also grow the account.
Gates work in two ways. An honour-system gate sends a button saying "I'm following" and trusts the tap. A verified gate asks Instagram whether the person really follows you. The difference is bigger than it sounds, and one tool has published numbers on it.

The follow gate checks through Instagram's API whether the commenter follows you. You choose a soft ask or a hard gate, and each check is recorded as asked, followed, or claimed but not following. If Instagram returns no answer, the gate fails open and sends the link. The gate is free on every plan.
Tadlo has published production data from its follow gate: across 12,344 follow checks over 23 days, 41% of commenters asking for a link did not follow the account, and 33.3% of people who tapped "I'm following" were not actually following. In other words, an honour-system gate would have handed the link to roughly one in three people who claimed to follow.

Why verification matters
People tap "I'm following" without following for an easy reason: it gets them the link faster. On an honour-system gate that tap is the whole check, so the gate grows your link clicks but not your followers.
A verified gate asks Instagram before sending. In Tadlo's published data, about a third of the people who said they were following were not. If follower growth is the reason you run the gate, that third is the part that matters.
Soft ask or hard gate?
- Soft ask: the DM asks people to follow, then sends the link either way. Friendlier, fewer complaints, smaller follower gain.
- Hard gate: the link is sent only after the follow is confirmed. More follows, but some people drop off.
- Our suggestion: use a hard gate for valuable freebies such as templates or guides, and a soft ask for product links, where the sale matters more than the follow.
